My daughter and I were waiting to go whale watching on June 15, 2012 and since we had some time to kill before boarding the boat, we happened on to the Balancing Rock quite by accident and decided to go see it.
It was a beautiful sunny day and the trail through the woods was an easy hike. We decended the staircase and it was the most spectacular sight awaiting us at the bottom.
I am 64 years of age and quite forgot that what goes down, must come up again. I very quickly realized how out of shape I am! Or maybe it is a age thing! Regardless, it was well worth seeing.

Yes the Balancing Rock really is a must-see when you are in the area. The trail is a nice walk through the woods and as you say the scene that comes to view during your decent down the steps is really breath-taking. It really shows our rocky coastline at its best.
What a good idea it is to include it as part of your whale-watching excursion and make a complete day of it! However if you decide to break it up into two days, don't worry there is so much to see on the islands to fill up a few days.
