The Big Scoop, Middleton N.S

(newcomer to N.s.)

On my recent stay in Nova Scotia I just happened across The Big Scoop in Middleton.

This place is famous for it's homemade ice cream, and believe me it is well worth the trip just for the ice cream!

However, they have an extensive menu, very reasonable in price and something for every taste. Their homemade deserts are to die for, especially their carrot cake (if you can forgo the sundaes!!)

They have a daily luncheon special which is always good, portions are a good size and their homemade soups are delicious.

Their wait staff is very friendly and helpful, one even helped me to find out where to purchase some fruit trees I wanted. Well worth a try if you are in the area.

For years the Big Scoop was the place to go for good home-made meals and of course their ice-cream. I remember stopping there after shopping trips up the valley, it used to be one of mom's favorites.

I had not been there for years and had actually heard some bad reports from there for a bit. But a few years ago when I was living back there caring for mom we used to stop in there again after shopping in Greenwood. I found that the food was still good then, and the staff was very friendly to us. They did what they could to accommodate mom, as she was either in a wheelchair, or walking very short distances with a cane.

The Big Scoop is located along Hwy #1 between Middleton and Kingston, in Wilmot. You may contact them by calling (902) 825 4526.

Thanks Deborah for your review of the Big Scoop.

I've been there many many times..did not know about the homemade ice cream. Are you sure you haven't got that one item mixed up with the Margaretsville home ice cream parlor? The food at the big scoop is delicious and the ice cream is soft serv as I recall. Thanks.

First and last time at this place
by: Frank Sisko

I too wish i had checked the web before wasting my time and money at this restaurant. What a joke. I went last Monday with my wife and 3 children. Sat there 20 minutes before even getting a menu. Once we got one the waitress didn't return for almost 15 minutes.(Note the restaurant was only half full)We had just decided to leave when she return with not such much as an apology for being so long. She asked us what we wanted so we ordered 3 burgers for the kids a one piece fish and chips and I order the large clams and beverages. So there we sit thinking she'd be right back with our drinks...no she didn't. My wife actually had to go up to the counter and ask another for them after 10 minutes. Which still took another 10 minutes and were wrong but we just took them as we were all thirsty. So half an hour goes by and still no food. Then I notice two tables that came in after us have their food but we still don't. I find our waitress ( I use that term loosely as she certainly wasn't waiting on us) and ask why people seated after us are served and we still have no food and how much longer it will be. She tells me 10 minutes and still no apology. So back i go waiting. After 22 minutes our food arrives except there is only one burger, a wee little piece of fish with soggy fries and clam strips not clams as I ordered. I inform her of the mistake and she says do you still want the clams and other burgers. Of course we have 3 children they all need to eat. She sighs so I have lost all patience and i tell her to forget it just take the strips away and wrap the burger and fish to go and get us the bill. She leaves with the food and brings out the wrapped food then shows me the bill. She has charged me for the five orders we actually placed. I tell her the mistake and she says well we cooked them so we have to charge you. "Are you serious, I'm not paying for something we didn't even get to look at or a wrong order" She said they were cooked she just didn't know it and that's our policy and she offers to give me a dollar off the 3 meals she messed up. I refuse and asked to speak to the owner. She informs me the owner is not in. Okay then, keep these orders too and here is 20 bucks to cover the drinks and we leave. I will never ever go here or recommend anyone go either. In all my years I have never been so enraged at a restaurant. I'm getting mad again just sharing my experience.

Outstanding

So, my wife and i decided to go for a meal at the "Big Scoop" for the first time today, to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Before we set off we thought it might be prudent to see if any comments had been put on the web regarding the quality of not just the food, but the service as well. We were disappointed to see one or two negative comments about the place and considered carefully going elsewhere, however, we decided to give the "Big Scoop" the benefit of the doubt. Upon arriving, the first thing to strike me was the amount of cars in the car park - a very good sign we thought.
Anyway, my wife and i both had a great meal, beautifully cooked, great service and very reasonably priced, hey, the place was busy with locals coming for Sunday lunch - that says it all!
We'll be back.

Not usually one to complain
by: Anonymous

Wish I had checked out the comments on this page before going to the not so big scoop. There is two hours of my life I will never get back. Stopped to the Big Scoop for a late dinner. Waited 20 minutes for someone to take our order and another 45 minutes before the food actually started to be delivered. When the food finally came it was brought out in bits and pieces...my son was finished eating before half of us even had our food. Serving size was small. An order of clams and chips had a whopping 6 clams. I found an unidentified object in my sandwich. Will not be back..........EVER!

BAD SERVICE
by: Maureen Lutz (538-3655)

Went to have lunch Saturday 03/02/2013 with my 2 grandchildren ,husband , son and daughter-in -law. Waited app 30 minutes before anyone took our order but noticed people all around us who came in later got there order taken right away.Arrived at 11:30 and app 12:30 I asked the waitress how much longer as we were at a hockey tournament and the children (4 and 6)were hungry. She said 10 more minutes. At 1 o'clock we put our jackets on and left.My biggest mistake was stopping at the cash and paying $14.00 for our coffee and the kids chocolate milk.Sure didn't take them long to come for the money.Told them our wait was ridiculious and they never even said they were sorry.Have been eating there many times over the years but this is my last visit and you can bet I will discourage anyone else from going there. If they continue to run their business like this they will be losing many customers.

Slow Inefficient Service
by: Anonymous

Poor management and unfriendly service has discouraged me from ever returning to the Big Scoop. The most recent visit required my family and I to wait a full one hour for our meals. Rather than inform us that they were exceptionally busy and it would take longer to be served initially when we were sat down, they took our order and only after 45 minutes, said they were extra busy. Not a professional thing to do during lunch hour. And, in the end, the meals were very disappointing.
Certainly not like meals enjoyed there in the past.

Will never return
by: Cathy

I have been to the Big Scoop 3 times this summer. Everytime was a disappointment. I went back 3 times to give them the benefit of the doubt. Everyone has a bad day and thing go wrong.
First time I went with a friend and we both ordered the 1 piece fish and chips for about 7.25 if I remember correctly. Portion was so small and when it arrived it was cold in the middle and the fries were soggy. The waitress just said oh that happens sometimes and walked away. I went to find the manager and told her my complaint. She simply stated it's cold because you didn't eat it right away. But agreed to make another. That arrived and was hot but the fries were still limp and soggy and the fish was over done. We ate it and left.
A month later I decided I'd try again. This time I had the Turkey Dinner and it was a very small portion and the turkey was old, dry and tasteless. Dressing was nothing more then what comes out of a box and the gravy was way to thick and tasted too flourly and salty. I ate what I could and left.
Yesterday I decided one more time. So off I went with 3 friends visiting from Ontario. I had the burger with was okay but a bit over cooked. Fries still soggy. My friends all had the fish and chips. They all sent it back and didn't order anything else. What a huge disappointment for their first time hear and that's what they are served. On a happy note we saw a sign for a place just a few miles away in Nictaux so off we went to the Saltspray. They all ordered the fish and chips and were amazed less then 2 dollars more and 3 times the portion. That will be my new go to place. Sorry Big Scoop but I can not afford any more chances with you.

Entree Meals
by: Anonymous

Our First time at the Big Scoop was Aug 01/2011.My hubby and I usually always order a turkey meal.I ordered a hot sandwich/my hubby the turkey dinner.I skipped the potatoes in place of the dressing.BIG Mistake.Tasted like stove top dressing. You could also taste the freezer in the meat. When you go to these places and you spend $30.00-$40.00 including the tip.Should go to subway or hold out until you get to your destination and eat at the familiar places where you know the food is good. The fried food looked good, but hey, anyone can do fried food. The waitress was very nice, but if she had been smart instead of apologizing, she would have suggested something else as I had informed her from the very beginning I was not satisfied. We all work hard for our dollar these days to spend a lot and still be hungry and leave disappointed. My husband ate the dressing cause he was so hungry but agreed with me about the food.If your looking for a great turkey supper the Crossroads restaurant in Windsor N.S. is hard to beat.I'd only go back for an ice cream.Have a great day everyone!!!
